It's that time of year again. Marvel have officially kicked off the 2018 Summer movie season with Avengers: Infinity War and we have an exciting few months of cinema ahead so, keeping with tradition, here's my annual summer movie preview! As always, the summer brings comic book films aplenty - from your mercs with mouths to ant-men and wasps - as well as a plethora of sequels, the likes of Sicario follow-up Day of the Soldado to Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, but it's a particularly exciting season for the myriad of indie films looking to make their mark - be it new A24 horror Hereditary or the heartfelt Tully. We have even a new Star Wars film hitting our screens next month, as well as the hugely-anticipated return of Pixar's favourite family; whatever it may be you're looking forward to, there is undeniably something on at the pictures for everyone in perhaps the most exciting summer movie season in years. I've compiled a little list of some of the more interesting and exciting films set to release between now and the end of August - the typical "summer movie" months. Look no further for your comprehensive guide to the forthcoming month of films. For here it is. And, of course, the films are listed in order of their U.K release dates.
APRIL
AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR
RELEASE DATE: April 26th, 2018. Obligatory mentioning of this because it's the biggest MCU film yet and kicking off the summer season with a bang. You've probably already seen it or you're planning on seeing it. It's Avengers. What more needs to be said?
MAY
I FEEL PRETTY
RELEASE DATE: May 4th, 2018. It's not a summer movie preview without an Amy Schumer comedy. Out Stateside plans seemed to enjoy her latest, I Feel Pretty, a film all about the idea of "it's what's on the inside and not the outside that matters". Schumer has had some good hits before. Could this be another? TULLY
RELEASE DATE: May 4th, 2018. Director Jason Retiman's latest tells the story of a struggling mother of three and the gifted nanny that comes to her rescue. The always-brilliant Charlize Theron leads the cast and it's very possibly an early contender for next year's awards season. LEAN ON PETE
RELEASE DATE: May 4th, 2018. I was lucky enough to see A24's latest at Glasgow Film Festival earlier this year and it's pure cinematic indulgence; it's such an emotional and beautiful story and one of the best films you'll see all year. Take note. LIFE OF THE PARTY
RELEASE DATE: May 11th, 2018.
As I said earlier, it's not summer movie season without Amy Schumer; well, it's also not one without a Melissa McCarthy flick and Life of the Party gets a mention just for that; McCarthy stars as a woman that goes back to her youthful days in the wake of her recent divorce. SHERLOCK GNOMES
RELEASE DATE: May 11th, 2018. Okay... But... like... We know this will be a meme-y delight. 7 DAYS IN ENTEBBE
RELEASE DATE: May 11th, 2018. Whilst the reviews for formerly titled Entebbe have been a mixed bag ranging from bad to great, the film boasts a talented enough cast and interesting enough premise to be one that will raise some eyebrows and perhaps get some butts in cinema seats. DEADPOOL 2
RELEASE DATE: May 15th, 2018.
The second coming is coming, motherfuckers. And Peter alone looks like this is going to be a blast. The first was amazing. Here'ss to hoping for another hilarious superhero smash. ON CHESIL BEACH
RELEASE DATE: May 18th, 2018. Fans of literature will be familiar with Ian McEwan's incredible story of a youthful and idyllic couple in 1962 England starring Saoirse Ronan - one of the finest actresses and talents working in the industry right now. SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY
RELEASE DATE: May 24th, 2018.
Alden Ehrenreich stars as a young Harrison Ford for the latest film in the recent Star Wars resurgence, the Han Solo spin-off film. I think this is perhaps the most unpredictable of the galaxy far, far away saga yet. But it'll be one to see nonetheless. SHOW DOGS
RELEASE DATE: May 25th, 2018.
Ah, yes. I can't wait for Beverly Hills Chihuahua 23. Don't lie, neither can you.
JUNE
JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM
RELEASE DATE: June 6th, 2018.
2015's Jurassic World was a pretty entertaining revival of the beloved franchise, and even went on to be the biggest film of that year - beating out Avengers: Age of Ultron and The Force Awakens. The sequel looks to be bigger and badder and pretty awesome: all the ingredients you need for one hell of a summer blockbuster if you ask me.
HEREDITARY
RELEASE DATE: June 15th, 2018.
Being hailed by many as"one of the scariest films in years", I think A24's latest horror film boasts a lot of promise and anticipation for that reason alone. Last year, the indie studio released horror gem It Comes At Night and they're following it with one potentially even more insane.
OCEAN'S 8
RELEASE DATE: June 22nd, 2018.
Following in the footsteps of 2016's Ghostbusters, Ocean's 8 will tackle Steven Soderbergh's Ocean's films... But with an all-female ensemble. And given the stellar talents in front of the camera, this one does have the potential to actually be pretty great.
SICARIO: DAY OF THE SOLDADO
RELEASE DATE: June 29th, 2018.
The first Sicario was one of the best films of 2015 - a nerve-shredding, dark and explosive thriller. With Taylor Sheridan returning to write its follow-up, and Benecio Del Toro and Josh Brolin back to star, the potential for this one is off the charts and it looks exceptional so far.
ADRIFT
RELEASE DATE: June 29th, 2018.
Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin have both proven themselves quite the forces of nature, both on strong track records following their YA-franchise works, and Adrift sees the pair team up for a quiet and provocative romance based on an incredible true story. Grab the tissues.
JULY
TERMINAL
RELEASE DATE: July 6th, 2018. Margot Robbie's latest is a thriller about two assassins in an anonymous city and it looks DOPE! The trailers have been mysterious and stylish and I'm honestly all in for this one. Plus it's Mike Myers' first film in 9 years which is awesome in itself. THE FIRST PURGE
RELEASE DATE: July 6th, 2018. The Purge films have actually been alright; it's probably one of the few horror franchises that hasn't completely derailed and become shit this many instalments in. And The First Purge has some cool concepts and potential; I'm certainly intrigued to see how it started. TAG
RELEASE DATE: July 6th, 2018. Hawkeye wasn't in Infinity War because he was knee-deep in the most intense game of Tag ever and I'm actually excited for this one. It looks like a lot of fun but also, 2018 comedies have really been bringing their A-game - Game Night, Blockers etc - so here's to hoping this is as good. Besides, it's based on a true story. Baffling yet intriguing. THE INCREDIBLES 2
RELEASE DATE: July 13th, 2018. After a long, LONG 14 years, Pixar's superhero family are finally returning to the big screen in the long-awaited sequel to 2004's masterpiece The Incredibles. Whether it'll be worth the wait or not, we'll have to wait and see. But we'll all be there with eager excitement. SKYSCRAPER
RELEASE DATE: July 13th, 2018. This year we're getting not one but TWO servings of Dwayne Johnson mania and whilst Rampage was god-awful, Skyscraper looks pretty awesome. If nothing else, we're a guaranteed a huge and exciting popcorn flick. HOTEL ARTEMIS
RELEASE DATE: July 20th, 2018. Imagine The Continental from John Wick getting an entire film dedicated to its intricacies, full of Wick-esque action and dripping with style so vibrant you can almost taste it... Well, that's Hotel Artemis and if you aren't sold yet, watch the trailer then you will be. MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN
RELEASE DATE: July 20th, 2018. A decade after 2008's Mamma Mia took the world by storm, we are finally set to return to the world of colourful music and ABBA as we go again in Here We Go Again. Cue a summer smash hit, and hopefully a swell follow-up to the original charmer. MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: FALLOUT
RELEASE DATE: July 26th, 2018. I moustache you a question. I'd shave it for later... But I don't think Paramount are all that keen for shaving taches but you can witness Henry Cavill's infamous facial brow as he plays the latest antagonist to take on Tom Cruise and his crew in another impossible mission. It looks awesome. HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA: SUMMER VACATION
RELEASE DATE: July 27th. 2018. They're still making these. And they're still a lot of fun. With very little in the way of kids films this Summer, you can expect this one to cash in big.
AUGUST
ANT-MAN AND THE WASP
RELEASE DATE: August 3rd, 2018. Fans desperate for another MCU film to salivate over after Infinity War can rest easy knowing it's not too far away. Ant-Man and the Wasp will reunite us with the beloved Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne as our eponymous heroes in a film that looks pretty fun and hilarious. TEEN TITANS GO! TO THE MOVIES
RELEASE DATE: August 3rd, 2018. The same weekend brings us a DC film too; it may not be a DCEU flick but the Teen Titans Go film looks like Warner Bros' answer to Deadpool... And child-friendly too. Honestly, I'll be there for Nicolas Cage finally playing Superman and Halsey as Wonder Woman. THE MEG
RELEASE DATE: August 10th, 2018. It's Jason Statham versus a fucking shark. A megalodon, even. Need I say more? THE SPY WHO DUMPED ME
RELEASE DATE: August 10th, 2018. Part-007, part-The Hitman's Bodyguard, it may not quite be Jane Bond but The Spy Who Dumped Me unarguably looks like a lot of fun. Plus, Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon are great comedic talents so I'm intrigued just by that pairing alone. MILE 22
RELEASE DATE: August 10th, 2018. It's another Peter Berg/Mark Wahlberg collab and, after Deepwater Horizon and Patriot's Day, this is one of the strongest director-actor collaborative pairing going. THE DARKEST MINDS
RELEASE DATE: August 10th, 2018. Cue obligatory YA Summer flick... Wait, this one actually looks promising? Huh. THE EQUALIZER II
RELEASE DATE: August 17th, 2018. The first Equalizer film was pretty awesome. Its sequel will also be Denzel Washington's first time reprising a role of his. With Antoin Fuqua returning to the helm too, this has promise. CHRISTOPHER ROBIN
RELEASE DATE: August 17th, 2018. Okay but you're lying if you say the teaser for this didn't just charm your socks off. The latest of the Disney live-action conveyor belt stars Ewan McGregor as an older Christopher Robin and reunites him with his old chum Pooh and gang (in adorable live-action form!!!) for one last adventure. Cue the tears. Cue the Disney magic. CRAZY RICH ASIANS
RELEASE DATE: August 17th, 2018. Director Jon M. Chu adapts Kevin Kwan's novel of the same name and it could be the underdog comedy of the year. Last Summer did it with The Big Sick and this has potential too. It's a pseudo-biopic too... I'm Asian. And crazy. Not quite rich though, at least not as rich as these folk: that was an exaggerated detail. UPGRADE
RELEASE DATE: August 31st, 2018. Robocop meets A.I meets Ex Machina but as a horror and the early buzz is through the roof. Time for me to upgrade on the horror genre and plug in for this one... Okay, even I admit those puns were bad. ACTION POINT
RELEASE DATE: August 31st, 2018. Johnny Knoxville plus the creators of Jackass = hilarious summer fun. So, there we have it, folks. The guide to the summer of 2018. The biguns, at least. What will you be checking out? Which Summer flick are you most anticipating? It's going to be a busy few months with plenty to look forward, that's for sure.
