I have to say, TV shows seem to be at a high right now. We've had so many great ones debuting recently and even more yet to premiere, one of which is Supergirl. Well, the CBS show has found its lead.

According to a new report from The Wrap, it's Whiplash and Glee star Melissa Benoist that will be suiting up as the titular superheroine in the highly anticipated show. She beat out several other girls contending for the role, including The Vampire Diaries' Claire Holt. Umm, yes please!

She'll play Kara, Superman's long-lost cousin in the CBS series. As the series’ mythology goes, Kara at age 12 was sent from her dying home planet of Krypton to Earth, where she was taken in by the Danvers, a foster family who teach her to be careful with her extraordinary powers. However, after having kept them in for about a decade, she is forced to pull out her powers in public, during an unexpected disaster. Energized by her heroism for the first time in her life, she begins to embrace these abilities by helping the people of her city, earning herself a super moniker along the way.

It certainly could, now, explain why she recently dyed her hair blonde (most likely, for the role):
If you're a regular to this site, you'll know that I absolutely ADORED Whiplash - it was fantastic. Having only opened earlier this month, it is probably going to be 2015's best film (read my review of it here). I thought that Benoist was fabulous in it, despite how small her role was. She brought a lot of charm and love to this otherwise dark, gritty film.

Her other, bigger acting credential is her role as Marley in Glee, which she joined back in Season 4. She has also had some guest roles in Homeland and The Good Wife in the past too and is set to appear, later this year, in The Longest Ride - opposite Britt Robertson and Scott Eastwood - as well as Al Pacino's Danny Collins.

Honestly, I'm digging this casting. Benoist has more than proven herself as an actress, to me anyway. She seems to be the perfect choice to bring Kara to life on the little screen and it'll be a role sure to boost her career even more. I'm definitely excited for the show and even more so now that Melissa is on-board. I'm sure she'll make an awesome Supergirl.

The series is set to take place in the same universe as CW's The Flash and Arrow and considering it's on CBS, CW's sister network, and all three heroes are a part of DC, we could possibly be seeing a crossover in the near future. Let's, at least, not cross it off as a possibility. Here's to hoping. The Supergirl pilot will be penned by Greg Berlanti (CW's two aforementioned shows) and Ali Adler (No Ordinary Family) and it's expected to premiere towards the end of 2015, start of 2016. A confirmed date is yet to be announced. With this news now out, we can expect to be hearing more about the show in the coming months.
