In 2014, Antoine Fuqua gave us the action-packed The Equalizer - a remake of the classic TV series - and, last year, he gave us boxing-drama Southpaw. This year, the director is set to remake another classic, this time The Magnificent Seven, and his reboot has received a first trailer and some first stills.

One of my favourite films of this year, so far, is Quentin Tarantino's Western, The Hateful Eight. As a big fan of the gun-slinging Western genre, one of my most anticipated films of 2016 is Antoine Fuqua's The Magnificent Seven remake. The film's plot is pretty simple and remains faithful to the 1960's classic: a group of 7 gun men, each with different skills, are hired to protect a small town from a group of thieving bandits. Of course, the original is an iconic film and boasted an iconic, stellar ensemble featuring the likes of Steve McQueen, Yul Brynner, Charles Bronson and James Coburn. However, it seems as though Fuqua has managed to hustle up a line-up of actors for his version of the film which is equally as impressive as its 60's counterpart.

This evening, Sony debuted the first trailer for the forthcoming film and it's wonderful. The reveal sets up the premise nicely and introduces us to its terrific cast, which features Denzel Washington leading the eponymous group - this will mark his third time collaborating with Fuqua, after Training Day and The Equalizer. There's action and guns and horses and cowboy hats aplenty and I love the style and the tone of the trailer. The other day, USA Today also debuted some first stills from the film too which also shows off the impressive ensemble, which also consists of the likes of Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke and Vincent D'Onofrio - an A-list team indeed.

Here's the film's official synopsis:

Director Antoine Fuqua brings his modern vision to a classic story in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures’ and Columbia Pictures’ The Magnificent Seven. With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard), the desperate townspeople employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns – Sam Chisolm (Denzel Washington), Josh Farraday (Chris Pratt), Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke), Jack Horne (Vincent D’Onofrio), Billy Rocks (Byung-Hun Lee), Vasquez (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), and Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier). As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money.
With Antoine Fuqua at the helm, and starring Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Byung-hun Lee, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Martin Sensmeier and Vincent D'Onofrio, The Magnificent Seven comes gun-slinging in cinemas on September 23rd, 2016.
