With Rogue One now under a week away, lots of studios have begun their marketing push for their big 2017 releases, in hopes of having their trailers show before the highly awaited Star Wars spin-off. Now, the latest film to join that push is next Summer's War for the Planet of the Apes, as the first trailer is unleashed in all its ape-shit glory.

Director Matt Reeves previewed a rough cut of the trailer to audiences at New York Comic-Con a couple of months back, to positive reactions. After patiently waiting to get our first glimpse of the film, 20th Century Fox have finally debuted the first trailer. Check it out:

I loved both Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War is most definitely one of my most anticipated films of next year. However, I'm now even more excited for this film after seeing this trailer. First and foremost, the visuals and the CG all look gorgeous - as we'd expect from these films by now. I love the action and dark tone to this too; each film has been getting progressively darker and this looks like the darkest, most intense of the trilogy.

Rise focused on the humble beginnings of Caesar and the eponymous ALZ-113 created apes, whilst Dawn chronicled Caesar's rise as a leader in difficult times. However, after the way that film ended, things didn't look good for Caesar and his crew and it certainly seems that way in the War trailer, as it all builds up to this. It's man vs ape and it looks epic. I love how throughout all the films, Caesar has still had a soft spot for humans and has always managed to take the moral high-ground but it seems as though he may find himself in a very dark place, morally, in this film, as he has to protect the apes from the humans, led by the Colonel (Woody Harrelson).

Here's the film's official synopsis:
In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.
With Matt Reeves at the helm, and starring Andy Serkis, Judy Greer, Steve Zahn, and Woody Harrelson, War for the Planet of the Apes swings into cinemas on July 14th, 2017.
