We're currently in the heat of all the Awards season madness, but it's always the annual Academy-Awards that are the high-point and the big night. Well, this afternoon, the 2017 Oscar nominations have finally been announced. So, let's talk about them.
The Golden Globes are now a couple of weeks behind us and the British tentpole of film awards, the BAFTA's, are right around the corner, but the Oscars are always the high-point of the chaotic annual Awards season. It's my personal favourite from the bunch too. This afternoon, the nominations for the 89th Annual Academy Awards. To no one's surprise, the Academy were as enamoured by La La Land as the rest of us, sweeping up a record-breaking 14 nominations! Moonlight followed in second place, snagging 8 noms, with the likes of Arrival, Lion, and Manchester By The Sea all proving to be hitters too, with many earned nods each.
Of course, the snubs and surprises from the Oscars are always in abundance and this year is no different. It's a shame to see Nocturnal Animals missing out on some deserved attention, but the biggest disappointment is perhaps that Amy Adams was snubbed for both her remarkable performances in that but also in Arrival too. It's nice to see Ruth Negga getting some love for Loving, though, although Viggo Moretensen was wholly unexpected - one I'm perhaps left a little sore by, feeling that as decent as Captain Fantastic was, it was also very overrated.
Regardless, you can find out the nominations in full below. Jimmy Kimmel will be hosting the 89th Academy Awards in just over a month's time, on February 26th, 2017. The (city of) stars will shine.
