We're a few months into the year now, and 2017 has already proved itself to be quite the strong year for films, with plenty of great films having released already. However, with a promising Summer ahead of us, there is now more reasons to be going to the cinemas now than ever before and, to continue the tradition, here's my Summer Movie Preview.

From your usual comic-book galore - Guardians Vol. 2 or Wonder Woman anyone? - to much-anticipated sequels - we have the likes of Despicable Me 3 and Alien: Covenant up and coming - and reboots aplenty - Baywatch, The Mummy and Diary of a Wimpy Kid, to name a few - this Summer is stacked with many exciting and promising films. And, continuing on the high of the past few months, it could be one of the best Summer movie seasons yet.

Below I have compiled a list of the films I believe are worth checking out in the 2017 Summer Movie Season. From blockbuster to indie, superhero flick to comedy, this is your handy guide to all the promising films opening this Summer. The Summer Movie Season usually begins at the start of May and runs through to the end of August, but it's starting earlier this year with some big, Summer films releasing this April too - so I've included a couple below.

These films are organised in terms of their UK release dates.

APRIL

FAST AND FURIOUS 8
RELEASE DATE: April 12th, 2017.

The Fast franchise has become a tent-pole franchise for Summer entertainment and Fast and Furious 8 looks like the biggest, craziest popcorn flick of them all... It'll definitely be furious at the box-office.

THE BELKO EXPERIMENT
RELEASE DATE: April 21st, 2017.

Imagine Saw but in a more real-life environment and you have The Belko Experiment. A violent, scary thrill ride from none other than James Gunn.

THEIR FINEST
RELEASE DATE: April 21st, 2017.

Also known as the Summer's go-to cutesy-tearjerker, this is the one you need to take your boyfriend/girlfriend/date to. Or go solo. We don't judge here.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2
RELEASE DATE: April 28th, 2017.

Yup, your favourite a-holes are back for round 2. Or, should I say, volume 2. It's the freaking Guardians of the Galaxy. We'll be there. Obviously.

MAY

ALIEN: COVENANT

RELEASE DATE: May 12th, 2017.

Every time Ridley Scott gets behind the camera, it's reason alone to be excited. Let alone for the fifth film in the beloved Alien franchise. The film looks terrifying and epic and worth watching if you love movies and, well... yourself? It's an Alien film, c'mon.

MISS SLOANE

RELEASE DATE: May 12th, 2017.

Jessica Chastain stars in this critically acclaimed dramatic thriller that was nominated for a Golden Globe. If you like high-stakes character pieces in the midst of all your Summer chaos, this will be one to seek out.

KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD

RELEASE DATE: May 19th, 2017.

This is not your average medieval period piece. Director Guy Ritchie is directing this new take on the King Arthur myth and legend and it looks like a fun, epic, fantasy that is just balls-to-the-wall insane and awesome. I don't know about the sword but could this be a cinematic... umm... legend? Arthur will certainly be King of fantasy films... if it's good anyway.

COLOSSAL
RELEASE DATE: May 19th, 2017.

The early buzz on Anne Hathaway's sci-fi Colossal promises an insane, goofy and quite terrific monster movie. A colossal hit? Very possibly.

SNATCHED

RELEASE DATE: May 19th, 2017.

This is the one you'll hear referred to as "it's that Amy Schumer's new film". Whether it will be good or not is a different question but Schumer always delivers big laughs (and box office returns). Besides, it managed to bring Goldie Hawn out of retirement so it must be pretty hilarious. So you'll want to snatch up a ticket opening night.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: SALAZAR'S REVENGE

RELEASE DATE: May 26th, 2017.

Pirates 5. Yes, I know. I can't believe we have another Pirates film coming out either. However, give this one a chance. It looks to return to the roots of the fun and it actually looks like a swashbuckling damn good time.

DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: THE LONG HAUL
RELEASE DATE: May 26th, 2017.

I've always enjoyed the Wimpy Kid films and The Long Haul looks like a reboot that could be fun for the whole family.

BAYWATCH
RELEASE DATE: May 29th, 2017.

King of the box-office, and now of the beach too, Dwayne Johnson is at the forefront of this Baywatch remake. Part Jump Street, part Paul Feig's Ghostbusters, this could go either way: good or bad. One thing's for sure, The Rock prevails. Go watch the Bae. Get it? Bae WATCH.

JUNE:

WONDER WOMAN

RELEASE DATE: June 2nd, 2017.

In a post-BVS and Suicide Squad world, the DCEU keeps on expanding, this time with Wonder Woman. What makes this different, though, is that it has energy. And colour. And jokes. Let's hope it launches the DCEU once and for all.

THE MUMMY

RELEASE DATE: June 9th, 2017.

Not a film about pregnancy but rather the Tom Cruise starring reboot of The Mummy, which sets the ground for Universal's monster-verse. If nothing else, Cruise has earned our respect and attention by this point. It looks like a fun monster flick, though. And when it comes to The Mummy, you need nothing more and nothing less.

WILSON

RELEASE DATE: June 9th, 2017.

Perhaps a more overlooked film or one many won't have heard of, Wilson stars the always great Woody Harrelson as the neurotic, motor-mouth titular lead and this film looks absolutely hysterical and a comedy to definitely look out for.

BERLIN SYNDROME

RELEASE DATE: June 9th, 2017.

This year's Sicario equivalent, Berlin Syndrome is an exercise in pure, nerve-shredding tension. And it's incredible. I got to see this one at Glasgow Film Festival, and I'm purely including it to tell you to watch out for this gem.

ALL EYEZ ON ME
RELEASE DATE: June 15th, 2017.

All eyes on the new Tupac Shukar biopic All Eyez on Me, which will dive into telling the "untold" true story of a famous rapper. If it's anything like Straight Outta Compton, it could be 'dope' - as the rappers would say.

GIFTED

RELEASE DATE: June 16th, 2017.

Marc Webb's first foray into directing since... The Amazing Spider-Man 2... yikes. However, it does look like a return to character-driven, indie roots for the director. Throw in a blacklist script and Chris Evans and it may gift to us a gift of an indie from a gifted cast and crew.

TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT

RELEASE DATE: June 23rd, 2017.

Bay-hem round 5. Don't kid yourself, you're going to go see it. And then you'll also complain when another one is greenlit. It's the circle of life.

THE BOOK OF HENRY
RELEASE DATE: June 23rd, 2017.

Following up from his venture into Jurassic World, Colin Trevorrow's newest picture returns to his dramatic indie roots. And with a star-studded cast and fascinating premise, it's shaping up to quite special.

BABY DRIVER
RELEASE DATE: June 28th, 2017.

Edgar Wright gets behind the wheel again for his latest film, about a getaway driver that listens to music called Baby. Need I say anything more?

DESPICABLE ME 3

RELEASE DATE: June 30th, 2017.

Both the first and second Despicable Me films were hilarious, and the third one looks just as wonderful, set to cement a solid animation trilogy. Minions was awful. So, hopefully, this can redeem Illumination from that monstrosity.

JULY

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING
RELEASE DATE: July 7th, 2017.

After making his scene-stealing debut in last Summer's Civil War, Tom Holland's Spider-Man is stepping into the spotlight for his solo film. But what makes this one different is that it's finally in the MCU. He's finally COMING HOME. Get it? That might be my best pun yet.

WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES
RELEASE DATE: July 14th, 2017.

Both Rise and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes were incredible, and War looks like it could a fitting conclusion to such a remarkable trilogy. Besides, who doesn't love watching apes on horses with guns and power.

CARS 3
RELEASE DATE: July 14th, 2017.

Dare I say it... but Cars 3 actually looks good. Regardless of anything, it undoubtedly looks wildly different and that's very promising.

THE BEGUILED

RELEASE DATE: July 14th, 2017.

What makes this remake of the 1971 film of the same name stand out from the crowd is its stellar cast, but even more than that, it's the fact that we have Sofia Coppola jumping back behind the camera for this one. I'm expecting to be beguiled. Beguile me, Coppola.

DUNKIRK
RELEASE DATE: July 21st, 2017.

Christopher Nolan's latest - Dunkirk - opens this Summer, and it's a gritty war thriller, shot entirely in IMAX. With Nolan one of the biggest directors in this industry today, you can be sure that this one will be epic.

THE DARK TOWER
RELEASE DATE: July 28th, 2017.

Many, many years in the making and the long overdue adaptation of Stephen King's iconic novel The Dark Tower is set to finally open this Summer. With stellar talent heading this ensemble, it'll be one to watch.

CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS: THE FIRST EPIC MOVIE
RELEASE DATE: July 28th, 2017.

Based on the hilarious and beloved children's novels, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie looks like an absolute blast. There's some beautiful animation, hilarious jokes and a superhero: what more do you want?

AUGUST

VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS
RELEASE DATE: August 4th, 2017.

3 years since his last film and sci-fi visionary Luc Besson is back for the adaptation of the Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets comic. From what we've seen thus far, it looks like an action-packed, visual feast but most of all, though, a return to form for Besson.

THE EMOJI MOVIE
RELEASE DATE: August 4th, 2017.

The fact this is even a thing is reason enough to pique some intrigue.

ATOMIC BLONDE
RELEASE DATE: August 11th, 2017.

Charlize Theron in a John Wick-esque action-fueled lead, one-half of the original two directors of the first John Wick, and you have this. And those two reasons alone already make it worth getting excited for.

ANNABELLE: CREATION
RELEASE DATE: August 11th, 2017.

Last year's Ouija sequel proved that bad horror films can get redeemable sequels. Maybe Creation will create something scary. Please.

LOGAN LUCKY
RELEASE DATE: August 25th, 2017.

Steven Soderbergh's latest follows the Logan brothers trying to pull off a heist during a NASCAR race. I'm sold already.

AMERICAN MADE
RELEASE DATE: August 25th, 2017.

A few years back, director Doug Liman and Tom Cruise gave us the surprisingly epic Edge of Tomorrow. This year, the pair re-team for crime-thriller American Made. I can bet it will be made in America by Americans.
