Hot off of having its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, the first trailer for Scott Cooper's gritty Western Hostiles has landed online.
Deadline debuted the trailer; check it out below:
Cooper is known for bringing grit and drama to his stories - all three of his prior films, Crazy Heart, Out of the Furnace, and 2015's Black Mass are all evidence of this - and his latest, Hostiles, looks no different. In fact, this looks like it could be the director's best film yet. The film opened at Telluride to pretty positive reviews praising some exceptional, gritty filmmaking and another incredible, Oscar-calibre performance from Christian Bale, as well as some stellar work from Rosamund Pike, and this trailer certainly hints at all of that and then some.
The film is yet to pick up a studio to back it but, given the promising word coming out of Telluride, topped with this intense and stunning trailer, Hostiles is sure to spark quite the bidding war when it heads to Toronto International Film Festival this weekend looking to land a distributor. There's no release date yet but we can almost guarantee that whoever takes this film under their belt will be eyeing up a late-2017/limited-2017 debut to qualify for Awards Season. And given all of the early buzz and the potential, why the hell would they not?

Here's the film's synopsis:
Set in 1892, Hostiles tells the story of a legendary Army Captain (Christian Bale) who, after stern resistance, reluctantly agrees to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief (Wes Studi) and his family back home to tribal lands. Making the harrowing and perilous journey from New Mexico to the grasslands of Montana, the former rivals encounter a young widow (Rosamund Pike) whose family was murdered on the plains. Together, they must join forces to overcome the punishing landscape, hostile Comanche, and vicious outliers they encounter along the way. With Scott Cooper at the helm, and starring Christian Blae, Rosamund Pike, Adam Beach, Ben Foster, and Jesse Plemons, Hostiles will most likely open late-2017, with a release date yet to be confirmed.
