With 2017 coming to a close, my best, worst and most anticipated of the year lists posted, I thought it would be fun to take a look back at the heart of film and marketing over the past 12 months: the trailers.

Trailers have always played a pivotal part in how we look at films and how we anticipate them, talk about them - they often provide us with good tea-break chat at work. It's a tricky thing too, making a good trailer; the best ones are those that are able to whet our appetites by getting us excited yet wanting to see more but ones that are also cautious in not revealing spoilers or showing the film's full hand (something that has sadly become a bit of a regular occurrence in trailers of late).

It's all about making us want to spend our hard-earned cash on watching that one particular film - whether it be the next big MCU blockbuster or an indie flick you've perhaps never heard of before. I thought it would be fun to take a look back and rank my favourite MOVIE trailers of 2017 - the ones that, in my opinion, did the trick in getting me excited, but still preserving the cinema experience. Before we dive into my top 10, though, I wanted to note some honourable mentions - ones that I LOVED but that perhaps weren't just for movies, though. Just note-worthy trailers.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS:

THE CW'S CRISIS ON EARTH-X SIZZLE

I'm a sucker for The CW's superhero shows - Supergirl and The Flash, anyway - and I love the big annual crossover events. This trailer for the 4-night Crisis on Earth-X did a good job of teasing a huge event with awesome heroes and cool action aplenty.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR OFFICIAL TRAILER
The Avengers: Infinity War trailer was epic. It teased the huge scale and ambition of next Summer's colossal MCU smackdown without giving away too much. As a big superhero nerd, it got me hyped. Very hyped. And the use of the theme was awesome too! Sadly, it just missed out on making my top 10. But I couldn't resist mentioning it because it's that cool.

THE LAST OF US PART II TEASER TRAILER #2

My love for the first The Last of Us is pretty up there. It's one of my favourite games of all-time; cinematically, it's visceral and intense and an experience that was just so rich and nuanced and so investing as a story - better than most films, on a cinematic and storytelling level. The latest reveal for The Last of Us Part II promises us more of that by introducing us to some new characters and a continuation of the story in this exciting, violent reveal.

DEATH STRANDING THE GAME AWARDS TRAILER
This 8 minute reveal for Hideo Kojima and Guillermo Del Toro's long-awaited Death Stranding was exciting and, quite frankly, chilling. Visually, it looks fantastic. This looks like an experience that will just be unlike any other. It's a very cinematic trailer but the storytelling looks unequivocal and on a whole other level for entertainment in general. I can't wait.

STRANGER THINGS 2 COMIC-CON TRAILER

As far as just entertainment in 2017 goes, Stranger Things 2 was my favourite. I loved it - and, I'm just going to say it, episode 7 isn't that bad, it's just misplaced. And the comic-con "thriller" trailer gave us our first look at the season and it was exciting and awesome and the fact that it was all set to Michael Jackson's iconic 'Thriller' too was the cherry on top of the cake and it made for a brilliant first look.

So there you have some honourable mentions; they're not all film trailers but just trailers that did the trick as pieces of marketing - trailers that I loved. But, as far as my 10 favourite movie trailers to release in 2017 go, check them out below:

TOP 10 MOVIE TRAILERS OF 2017:

10. STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI OFFICIAL TRAILER

Okay, a lot of people were excited for The Last Jedi. This guy included. And, yes, I managed to avoid this for some time but I was curious to go back and watch it having seen the film and, as a reveal, as a tease, this is awesome. Never has a trailer been so misleading. This trailer showed off lots of cool footage and exciting concepts that the film touched upon whilst never really giving anything away at all. But it did trick the hell out of us. And still get us hyped.

9. SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE TEASER TRAILER

The animated Spidey film - or Into the Spider-Verse, as it's called - is still about a year out but this short first teaser did a good job of getting us interested. I forgot this was even coming out, I'll be honest. But it's just such a cool trailer; it's short and sweet but visually gorgeous - as if it's plucked straight from an actual comic-book. It's Miles Morales too, who we haven't seen in a Spidey film yet, and the teaser got a lot of people excited for this one.

8. A GHOST STORY OFFICIAL TRAILER

The trailer for A Ghost Story is basically the film in a nutshell. Yet, despite this, it still keeps its cards close to its chest. This is a trailer that tells us a lot but doesn't show us a lot; it sets up the tone and the concept of the film and lets us know we're in for a very poetic, absurd and emotional journey - everything this trailer is, and everything the film was too. Also, it's set superbly to the film's main track "I Get Overwhelmed" - the best use of a song in a film this year, in my opinion.

7. IT COMES AT NIGHT TEASER TRAILER

At only 1 minute 36 seconds long, this trailer gives NOTHING away. But what it does do is show a very select handful of poignant and chilling imagery and set a very creepy, truly unnerving and mysterious atmosphere that will undoubtedly make you want to see and know more. Just from this trailer, it's evident this film is a horror but one that will be different and riveting. Job well done, A24.

6. IT TEASER TRAILER

Oh, look. Another first-look reveal teaser that gives practically nothing away but is masterful in being atmospheric and exciting: the IT teaser trailer. This gave fans their first look at the long-awaited reboot/re-adaptation of Stephen King's IT and it was pretty terrifying. It was dark and unsettling and introduced us to Bill Skarsgard's haunting Pennywise the Clown - whilst still not properly revealing him and only giving us small teases. The teaser certainly scared me but had me insanely excited to see more. The projector scene too!!!

5. BLADE RUNNER 2049 OFFICIAL TRAILER

All of the trailers for Blade Runner 2049 were great, and the film perhaps had one the strongest marketing campaigns of the year but it was the official first trailer that was the best by far. This is a film that is full of surprises and this trailer managed to show off the HUGE scale and ambition of the film whilst giving nothing away - hardly any plot details; nothing. It teased the gorgeous visuals and action and the return of Harrison Ford's Deckard and that was about it. Many were skeptical about 2049 but this trailer turned that doubt into excitements. Now that's no easy feat.

4. THE FLORIDA PROJECT OFFICIAL TRAILER

A24 honestly make the best trailers and the best films. The Florida Project was one of the best films of 2017 and this first trailer got me excited. Moreover, this was a film I knew nothing about but this trailer is so simple and joyous yet equally as provocative and beautiful that it had me so excited for the full film. Similarly to A Ghost Story, it's a trailer able to so perfectly encapsulate its film without giving anything away and it's so able to invest you emotionally... in a mere 2 minutes.

3. MOTHER! OFFICIAL TRAILER

Talk about a controversial film, eh. Well, the mother! trailer had people talking. This was a trailer that was just so insane and unusual that it had people wanting to see more, wanting to know just what the fuck is actually going on here!!! I love the ambiguity here; it's a very tense and atmospheric reveal that feels so sinister and chilling and it was one that teased so much unusual imagery that it made me excited to see the whole picture. As far as trailers go, it did the trick. It pushed its cast and visuals to the forefront and let them do the work.

2. THOR: RAGNAROK TEASER TRAILER

Set to 'Immigrant Song', the teaser for Thor: Ragnarok nailed the tone of the film to come. Anyone that is familiar with Taika Waititi's work will have felt right at home with this teaser, fittingly out-there and hilarious. It was stylish, trippy and cool and let fans know exactly what was in store for them and teased nothing apart from Hela and the Thor/Hulk dynamic and duel.

1. BABY DRIVER OFFICIAL TRAILER

Baby Driver was one of my most anticipated films of 2017 and its trailer easily takes my top spot for the year. Why? Because it's just so-typical Edgar Wright. We've talked about trailers on this list that made great use of music, encapsulated the film without giving much away and just showed off some cool visuals to have us wanting to see more. The official trailer for Baby Driver did all of that, and then some. It teased the film's awesome soundtrack, the visceral action, the sharp Wright humour and the stylish, pulpy flair we could expect from the film. It was awesome. It still is awesome and it makes me want to throw in my Blu-Ray of the film every time I see it. It's a fun and exciting trailer that had me cheering and so excited.
