2016 has come to a close and it's finally 2017 now, which means we have a whole 12 months of movies to look forward to, and this year is PACKED with lots of exciting new releases to look forward to. You've seen my best and worst of 2016, now here's my most anticipated films of 2017.

Last year brought us many big, hugely anticipated films from the likes of Deadpool, Captain America: Civil War, Batman v Superman, Ghostbusters and much more. However, it's nothing in comparison to what 2017 holds in store for us. As we approach the first cinematic weekend of the year, writers are scrambling to finish their top 10 best, worst and most anticipated lists. And, of course, here's my most anticipated films of 2017.

With the many promising films set to make their mark this year, it was a really hard task (harder than most years) to whittle down my top films. I'm an optimist so, of course, I'm excited for so many of the films arriving within the next 12 months but I've cherry-picked the frontrunners. Before we dive into my top 10, though, here are some honourable mentions.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS:

THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE
RELEASE DATE: February 10th, 2017.

I loved The Lego Movie. I loved Lego Batman in The Lego Movie. A spin-off dedicated to that character? Sign me up.

GHOST IN THE SHELL

RELEASE DATE: March 31st, 2017.

Based on the popular anime, this Hollywood remake stars Scarlett Johansson as an ass-kicking cyborg. And it looks epic.

DISNEY PIXAR'S COCO

RELEASE DATE: December 8th, 2017.

Anytime Pixar have a new release, I'm there. 5 years in the making and Coco, in particular, sounds like yet another delight that I'm sure I will adore - as always.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

RELEASE DATE: March 17th, 2017.

Disney have been on a winning streak with their live-action adaptations and this reimagining of one of my all-time favourite animations looks so magical.

THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS

RELEASE DATE: April 14th, 2017.

The Fast and Furious franchise is one of my favourite franchises out there. I love these films and The Fate of the Furious looks even more insane than before.

JUSTICE LEAGUE

RELEASE DATE: November 17th, 2017.

The DC Cinematic Universe has yet to truly knock my socks off. Will Justice League do it? All these beloved heroes in one film? Here's to hoping.

KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE

RELEASE DATE: September 29th, 2017.

The first Kingsman film was amazing and such a welcomed surprise. Even Matthew Vaugh is back this time. Let's hope it's just as awesome.

ALIEN: COVENANT

RELEASE DATE: May 19th, 2017.

Ridley Scott is directing another Alien film, the follow-up to Prometheus. Need I really say more?

WONDER WOMAN

RELEASE DATE: June 2nd, 2017.

Gal Gadot stole Batman v Superman. Perhaps this will be the first great DC film? I love this character and I've loved everything I've seen thus far.

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING

RELEASE DATE: July 7th, 2017.

Spider-Man is back, and he's FINALLY in the MCU. This looks like the perfect,
most accurate on-screen depiction of the character we've seen yet.

So there are some releases that I'm definitely excited for but that just narrowly missed out from being in my top 10, which is comprised of films I want to see that little bit more. Here they are.

TOP 10:

10. JOHN WICK: CHAPTER TWO
RELEASE DATE: February 17th, 2017.

The first John Wick was the biggest surprise of 2014, an action-thriller that was so mad and fun and that managed to establish such a fascinating world and even give Keanu Reeves a perfect role as the eponymous character. John Wick: Chapter Two comes with the promise of even more of what we loved the first time around, without seeming like a rehash, and it looks truly and utterly ridiculous. In a good way. The best way possible even.

9. DUNKIRK

RELEASE DATE: July 21st, 2017.

Christopher Nolan is one of my favourite directors working today, if not my favourite. Anytime he is directing a film, you can guarantee I'll be there. On top of that, Dunkirk is a dark, gritty World War 2 film. I didn't love the trailer which is only why it's this low on my list but I'm still incredibly excited for this one and I'm sure it will be another gem for the filmmaker.

8. KONG: SKULL ISLAND

RELEASE DATE: March 10th, 2017.

In a time where everything is becoming a cinematic universe, following on from 2014's pretty good Godzilla, comes Kong: Skull Island. Not only did I love Peter Jackson's King Kong, in 2005, but Skull Island has such a stellar cast that I all but adore at the moment and a promising new director in Jordan Vogt-Roberts.The trailers were awesome. All hail the King, indeed.

7. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2
RELEASE DATE: April 28th, 2017.

The first Guardians of the Galaxy was something so special for not only Marvel but also for comic-book movies in general. It's one of my favourite MCU entries thus far and Volume 2 looks set to top even its predecessor. With even more crazy action; even more hilarious jokes; even more of the fantastic camaraderie between our eponymous heroes, and, of course, Awesome Mix Volume 2 which we cannot forget about, I'll be there opening night. Oh, and just Baby Groot ALONE has me over the moon for this. Baby. Freaking. Groot.

6. LOGAN
RELEASE DATE: March 3rd, 2017.

It's known that I'm quite the comic-book aficionado but, above and beyond anything else in all the comic lore, Wolverine is my favourite Marvel hero. I loved 2013's The Wolverine and, for that reason alone, would be excited for a sequel to that. Then you have Logan, which will reunite James Mangold and Hugh Jackman, and will be our first R-rated portrayal of the character on the big screen (in his true violent, R-rated glory) AND, to top it all off, will be Jackman's final time donning the claws after 17 years. I love the kind of small-budget indie film vibe, almost Western-esque, that the teaser trailer gave us. I'm so ready for this. The Dark Knight of 2017 possibly?

5. BLADE RUNNER 2049
RELEASE DATE: October 6th, 2017.

The original Blade Runner is a classic and one of my personal favourite sci-fi films out there. 35 years later and we're finally returning to the post-apocalyptic world Ridley Scott created and being reunited with Harrison Ford's Deckard Shaw. The new leading man this time around though is the always charismatic and incredible Ryan Gosling. But the main reason I'm remaining firmly optimistic for Blade Runner 2049 is Denis Villeneuve, who is currently one of the best new filmmakers working, and if Prisoners, Enemy or Sicario weren't evidence enough, Arrival should be. I'm normally against the idea of sequels to classics decades later but I'm all for this one.

4. BABY DRIVER
RELEASE DATE: August 11th, 2017.

Edgar Wright is another one of my favourite directors in this industry and it's been a few years since we've seen a film from him; this year brings his newest flick Baby Driver. I loved The Cornetto Trilogy and Scott Pilgrim and was really only excited for Ant-Man because of his involvement. Wright's films are especially known for always having great music and great soundtracks and Baby Driver is all about its music and its soundtrack. The cast is incredible too and the cherry on top is that it's also a crime film. Did I mention Edgar Wright wrote and directed it too? Because Edgar Wright wrote and directed it.

3. THOR: RAGNAROK
RELEASE DATE: October 27th, 2017.

As you've probably gathered from this list thus far, I love superhero films. However, none of 2017's comic-book films get me as excited and feeling like a little 12-year-old kid again as this year's Thor: Ragnarok does. The first two Thor films are enjoyable, albeit if not some of the MCU's finest hours. However, Ragnarok has a few things going for it that make me feel it's going to be one of the best MCU pictures yet. For starters, the Comic-Con reel we got was just so so so hilarious. The Ragnarok storyline from the comics is also just insane. We're also getting Hulk and Doctor Strange in this film, and bits of the Planet Hulk storyline too. And, comedic genius Taika Waititi is behind the camera and he directed 2014's hilarious What We Do in the Shadows and last year's also hilarious Hunt for the Wilderpeople so you can be sure we're going to get a hilarious, epic film with this one. "A buddy picture with Thor and Bruce Banner": sounds like a winner to me.

2. WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES
RELEASE DATE: July 14th, 2017.

We've seen apes with guns. We've seen apes on horses. Now, prepare yourselves for apes with guns in choppers. And there are more apes on horses too, don't worry. War for the Planet of the Apes looks amazing. The first two films were astounding and this looks no different and I feel we could have a remarkable trilogy on our hands here. We've seen the Rise and the Dawn, the ante has been upped, and now it's time for War. It's a war film. With apes. That have guns and ride choppers and speak. What more do you want?

1. STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII
RELEASE DATE: December 15th, 2017.

YOU GUESSED IT! My most anticipated film of 2017 is none other than Star WarsL: Episode VIII. I love Star Wars, did you know that? Well, I do. The Force Awakens relaunched the Star Wars saga to monumentally exceptional heights and, whilst it may have been a bit of a retread (guess what? It was still great), Episode VIII will be something new and different. The Force Awakens left us with so many questions and so much excitement with its final shot revealing Luke. And following the recent passing of Carrie Fisher, Episode VIII is going to be even more emotional and impactful and important for the fans. I loved The Force Awakens, and I loved Rogue One, and I need Episode VIII.
