Video game movies don’t have the best track record, which 2016 proved beyond a doubt. However, despite the fact that studios just haven’t found their footing making them, it doesn’t mean they’re going to stop trying and the Uncharted film looks like it's going to be making its attempt at breaking the curse fairly soon. Because its script is finally finished.

Last year brought bad video-game adaptations in abundance, with the likes of Ratchet and Clank, Angry Birds and Warcraft. Even Assassin’s Creed failed to impress critics and audiences alike, despite a great cast and the promise of perhaps being the first great video game movie. Whilst it’s not a positive sign for video-game films to come, we’d certainly hope that the adaptation to break the mould is on the horizon. With potentially promising films like Splinter Cell, Minecraft, Tomb Raider all in the works, we hope it’ll be sooner rather than later. The long-awaited Uncharted film is another title that we wait with baited breath for too. Despite production being very stop-start with that one, though, the script is now completed and it’s quickly coming to fruition.
This past week, writer Joe Carnahan took to Instagram to share that the film’s script is “done and dusted”. Carnahan’s other works include 2010’s The A-Team and 2011’s The Grey, both which he wrote as well as directed. He described the script as “a beast” and “monstrously cool”, something fans of the game should be excited about – take it with a pinch of salt, though, for this is the writer praising his work here. Carnahan has written some fun, exciting screenplays in the past, especially in the action genre but his films are yet to truly shine – which means, for a video game film such as Uncharted, it won’t go about redefining this genre if it’s merely competent. However, I do really LOVE the Naughty Dogs game and their stories and style so, for that reason, I’m remaining cautiously optimistic that it’s going to stay true to its source material.

Check out Carnahan’s Instagram post below:

The Uncharted film has been stuck in development hell ever since it was announced back in 2009, with many writers, directors and actors having come aboard the project over the years, the likes of which include the likes of The Fighter’s Academy-Award winning David O’Russell and Horrible Bosses Seth Gordon who were set to direct at one point or another and mega-star Mark Wahlberg was supposed to star in the lead role. As it currently stands, Night at the Museum’s Shawn Levy is at the helm, with a script penned by Carnahan, and there’s currently no one attached to star. Carnahan has previously described the film as "anti-Indiana Jones"; the game, and its lead Nathan Drake especially, shares a lot of Indy similarities o it'll be interesting just to see what kind of tone and action and story they go for here.

So many development problems don't exactly make a good case in favour of this adaptation, but other films have pulled through even worse situations and proven to be quite the hits - take a look at Deadpool or Steve Jobs, for example. Rumours suggest that Sony are fast-tracking Uncharted which isn't much of a surprise, but even with a completed script, this film could still be a few years away from releasing. It just depends on how quickly it gets off the ground from here. Carnahan isn't wrong though, for this is where the "real work" begins. But I'll only really believe that the Uncharted film is finally releasing when I'm sitting in the cinema for a screening of it. Let's hope it's sooner rather than later, and let's hope THIS is the one to put video-game movies on the right track (but, let's be honest, how many times have we hoped for that for these films now).
